Born in Springfield in the USA, the home of the Simpsons, entrepreneur Susan Hallam was always looking for the next big thing. Having studied politics in the USA, France and England she found herself in Washington DC and then later analysing polling data on punch cards to understand how people vote.
It was there her interest in information data began. She decided to do a Masters Degree in the relatively new subject of Information Science which then became the backbone of how the internet and search engines use data today.
Susan met her husband Mike, while studying in the UK and they settled in Nottingham. After working for a number of major corporations such as BT and Capital Bank and lecturing in computer science at Nottingham Trent University, she set up her own business – Hallam Internet – which now employs 60+ people.
But at the start it wasn’t easy to educate businesses about the importance of the internet, SEO, websites etc and keep up with all the new developments. Now with an MBE for entrepreneurship and innovation and thirty years of helping businesses thrive online, Susan Hallam tells her story.
